WHERNSIDE

Whernside is the highest of the Dales 3 peaks challenge, its the easiest of the 3 peaks but quite a long circular walk, one for a summers day with plenty of lights so children can take plenty of stops along the way.

Gradual climb  for the first 2 miles then you start to raise before the final incline on steps, the steepest section is the decent.

Very busy at weekends and holidays

Easy/Moderate walking with experience

The Walk starts across the road on a path leading towards the viaduct, and leads past the viaduct to meet a grassy path and  onto some steps, follow the path and you will come to a sign post for Whernside which you follow and continue ahead, you can see all of the Yorkshire 3 peaks from this point..

You pass a train signal box and in the distance a waterfall on your left.

The path is well marked and leads all the way to the summit, the final  section is a steeper incline on paved steps to the summit plateau which you follow to the trig point.

For the circular walk you continue past the summit as the path then starts to decline and drops very steeply downhill, heading through farmers fields towards the viaduct towards the starting point.

Ariya was 3 when we done Whernside and she managed fine, i would say the last 2 miles back to the car was a drag, we took a few stops for snacks and rest the feet before we continued.
